The Nobel prize started off in  1901 with over 114 years of Awards in peace,  chemistry, medicine, literature, economics and physics. Since it’s inception in 1901, people of African descent have won the title in their respective fields. Below are the Top African Nobel prize winners.

1. MAX THEILER (30 January 1899 – 11 August 1972)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH: SOUTH AFRICA

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE 1951

ACHIEVEMENT: Discovered the Vaccine for yellow fever.

2. ALBERT CARMUS ( 7 November 1913 – 4 January 1960)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH: ALGERIA

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE 1957

ACHIEVEMENT: His literary works.

3. ALBERT LUTULI (1898 – 21 July 1967)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH: SOUTH AFRICA

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE 1960

ACHIEVEMENT: Non violent fight against Apartheid in South Africa (First Black man to win a Nobel prize)

4. MOHAMMED SADAT (15 October 1970 – 6 October 1981)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH: EGYPT

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE 1978

ACHIEVEMENT: 3rd president of Egypt. Peace treaty between Egypt and Israel

5. ALLAN M. CORMACK

COUNTRY OF BIRTH: SOUTH AFRICA

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE 1979

ACHIEVEMENT: Worked on the X-Ray Computed Tomography machine (CT scanner)

6. DESMOND M TUTU (7 September 1986 – date)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH :SOUTH AFRICA

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE 1984

ACHIEVEMENT: Role in Resolving Apartheid in South Africa.

7. AKINWANDE OLUWOLE BABATUNDE SOYINKA (13 July 1934 (age 80)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH:  NIGERIA

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE 1986

ACHIEVEMENT: His literary works notably lion and the jewel, trial of brother jero among others.

8. NAGUIB MAHFOUZ (December 11, 1911 – August 30, 2006)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH: EGYPT

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE 1988

ACHIEVEMENT: First Contemporary Writer of Arabic literature.

9. GOLDIMER NADINE (20 November 1923 – 13 July 2014)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH: SOUTH AFRICA

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE 1991

ACHIEVEMENT: Literary works to fight Apartheid.\

10. NELSON MANDELA ( 18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH: SOUTH AFRICA

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE 1993

ACHIEVEMENT: 1st south Africa president and key fighter against Apartheid.

11. FREDERICK WILLEM (18 March 1936 (age79)

COUNTRY OF BIRTH: SOUTH AFRICA

AWARD: NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE 1993

ACHIEVEMENT: Last state President of South Africa, shared the Nobel Peace prize with Nelson Mandela.
